Sunday morning quotes can help you see Sunday as the day of leisure it is supposed to be again.
Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. I always picture my ideal Sundays as sitting out in a nice, warm garden, eating fruit, drinking coffee, and chatting with friends. Maybe we have a lazy cocktail after picking herbs from the garden, or go to the local farmer’s market to browse for organic vegetables. But, those sorts of lazy Sundays seem to be far in the past unless you are rich, lucky enough to work from home, or retired. Instead, these days, Sundays consist of getting ready for the coming school or work week, with nary a moment to relax in sight. However, sometimes we need to stop and enjoy our Sundays. these soothing Sunday morning quotes will help you do just that.
Sunday morning quotes can help you reclaim your Sundays.
Sundays are not supposed to just be about getting ready for Monday and the rest of the daily grind that happens during the week. Sundays are supposed to be enjoyable. People should rise late, read a newspaper or watch some mindless television, or just sit around in their bathrobes being leisurely. However, those sorts of Sunday mornings seem to be in short supply in our hyper-connected, digitized lives. We are so plugged into our busy lives that we never just get a chance to slow down – even on the supposed day of rest. To that end, we have put together a list of lovely Sunday morning quotes to help you learn how to enjoy Sunday morning again.
1. “I’m obsessed with radio. It’s a good start to Sunday morning.”-R.L. Stine
Robert Lawrence Stine, who is also known as either Jovial Bob Stone or Eric Afabee, is a great American novelist. He also writes screen plays and produces films. He is best known for his work under the name R.L. Stine, which encompasses the adolescent Goosebumps series, which is a series of frightening books that have been, true to their name, giving horror-loving kids goosebumps for decades. Stine’s quote encompasses all that is great about this list of Sunday morning quotes, and what is such a shame about what Sundays have become.
Each individual person has his or her own idea about what constitutes leisure, rest, and relaxation. Clearly, for R.L.Stine, one of those things is listening to the radio. So much so, in fact, that he refers to it as an obsession. The thing is, though, that is what Sunday morning should be about for everyone, even if it is just for a little while. Perhaps you like making a big breakfast and enjoying it with your newspaper. Or maybe you like to watch the Sunday morning political shows on cable news networks. Or maybe you want to stay in bed with a good book, and finally crawl on out around noon, when Sunday morning is effectively over. No matter what your favorite pastime is, you should spend a Sunday morning or two doing it. That is what R.L. Stine does, which is why he landed at number one on this list of Sunday morning quotes.
2. “When I wake up on a Sunday morning with a slight hangover, in the gym with no makeup on, that is who Natalie Dormer really is. the girl next door who gets a spot on her forehead occasionally.”-Natalie Dormer
Natalie Dormer is a British actress, and well known for her role as Margaery Tyrell on HBO’s Game of Thrones. She was also featured in The Hunger Games, so fans of dystopian future fiction are likely well acquainted with this talented leading lady. However, she is also very much a real person, which is what this quote illustrates.
Perhaps one of the saddest thing about this culture that has made us lose our Sundays is the fact that we live in such a perfection and performance driven society now. With social media, every flaw, every mistake you have ever made, everything that has ever given you reason to cower is out there for the world to see. The thing that makes this Natalie Dormer quote so important on this list of Sunday morning quotes is this: She acknowledges her own humanity. If one of the most successful women in the world can do that, so can the rest of us.
For Natalie Dormer, Sunday mornings are about paying for the fun she had on Saturday night, in the form of a slight hangover and a good workout. She gets to (literally) let her hair down and be herself. She is unabashed and unashamed to admit to drinking a bit or to having imperfect skin, no matter what she might look like on camera.
Maybe we could all do with a bit of trading in our constant quest for perfection for a few Sunday mornings of imperfect bliss. This just might be the most important idea yet on this list of Sunday morning quotes.
3. “You know what I like to do on a Sunday morning?Clean my house. I really enjoy it; it’s my ritual. I require tidiness actually. I have to have everything spotless before I can relax.”-Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Jonathan Rhys Meyers is an Irish actor who has comprised many roles. He was even in Mission Impossible III, and has played rock n’ roll legend Elvis Presley. This quote is perhaps one of the most interesting on this entire list of Sunday morning quotes.
Most people balk at the idea of thinking of something like housework as cathartic or relaxing. Further, we definitely would not consider spending out leisure time cleaning our homes. In fact, it is a task most people dread. There’s a reason such things are referred to as “doing chores.” However, as this Jonathan Rhys Meyers quote so beautifully illustrates, we all have different ideas about what is and is not relaxing.
If Mr. Meyers likes to get down with his mop bucket and toilet brush on Sunday morning, more power to him. I wish he’d come clean my apartment for fun. I am sure we all do. But, the point is, these Sunday morning quotes reveal just how brilliantly unique we all are. You can tell so much about a person just by knowing how they like to spend their Sunday mornings – even if it’s cleaning.
4. “Just in terms of allocation of time resources, religion is not very efficient. There’s a lot more I could be doing on Sunday morning.”– Bill Gates
Bill Gates is the infamous businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He currently runs the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with his wife. They give millions to charity. Before all of that was possible, though, Mr. Gates did something extraordinary: He co-founded Microsoft. Chances are, without him, you would not be reading this right now on whatever device you are accessing it from.
Now, as a businessman, Bill Gates obviously has to think in terms of resources, as the above quote suggests. Time is most definitely a resource; after all, there are only so many hours in the day. I am sure to someone like Bill Gates, spending time at church on a Sunday morning is taking away from the time he could be spending working to make the world a better place, be it through technological advancement or through charity work. Either way, he clearly has other things to do that do not involve making his way to church.
While such a quote might be off putting to devout church goers, this once again is something that illustrates our diversity of thought and action, and highlights just how beautiful our differences make us. Though I really do hope that Mr. Gates takes some leisurely Sunday mornings here and there. He has certainly earned it. Then again, perhaps his form of work is what relaxes him.
5. “I want to host a religious show. I’m sure nobody will be wanting the 11 o’clock spot on Sunday morning. I think we should really get some of our own preachers and preach that gay is good. And we’d have a great choir.”-Kate Clinton
Kate Clinton is an American humorist. It is fitting to add her to this list of Sunday morning quotes, because she wants to do the same thing that many people do on Sunday mornings, which is go to church. However, she does it with a twist. There is a notorious amount of animus between the LGBTQ community and many elements of mainstream religion, so Clinton’s solution seems to be to beat them at their own game.
Now, some folks would not like what she is proposing here, but hey, that is the beauty of diversity. If Kate Clinton wants to spend her Sunday mornings promoting a “gay is good” religion, let her. That just might be her calling, aside from what she does already. What matters is that her Sunday morning is meaningful, which is the whole point of this list of Sunday morning quotes.
Sunday morning quotes reveal what is important to individuals, and show us how to take our Sunday mornings back.
We all have different ideas about what the ideal leisurely Sunday morning should be like. In fact, as we see from some of the quotes above, Sunday morning leisure may not be leisurely at all. Your ideal might be doing something that means a lot to you, or simply spending time alone or with friends who love and admire you . The important thing is this: We need to stop thinking of Sunday as just a day to get ready for Monday’s grind. We really should start enjoying Sunday morning again.
