Despite knock knock jokes being so very popular, it’s hard to find an actual source that can say where they originated. There are many theories about how they may have originated, however it’s hard to find the actual truth as to how they started and how they became so popular.

One theory is that knock knock jokes developed simply as a result of “call and answer” routines that castle guards used to identify people after dark in the middle ages. Without the electricity and with little resources to create light back then, people approaching the castle after dark would call out to the guards to get inside. The guards would then say “who’s there?” and there would be a back and forth conversation to figure out the person’s identity.

Another theory is that knock knock jokes originated from one of Shakespeare’s plays. In the famous play ‘Macbeth’, a funny character delivers a very long and humorous speech that follows the same kind of format as a knock knock joke.

Even though we don’t fully know where these funny knock knock jokes originated, the are still incredibly entertaining.
